Seattle, Washington | Travel Diary

Hello there all!!!

I have missed blogging these past few weeks but work has been über busy and I have started to prep for back-to-school and seeing friends before they head back to university so free time has been scarce.  However, before school starts back up on September 7th my mother and I wanted to go on a little trip somewhere. I have never been to Seattle but it is home to so many incredible landmarks (The Space Needle, for instance) and hasbeenthe setting of so many well-known and loved movies and TV shows (50 Shades of Grey, Sleepless in Seattle, Grey’s Anatomy, Frasier).  Fairmont Olympic Hotel sign

We left home on Monday, August 22nd, taking a local ferry down to Seattle Pier. I live near Vancouver, BC, and Seattle is so close but strangely enough I have never been there. We arrived and explored the hotel for a good hour or so because it was so gorgeous. We stayed in the Fairmont Olympic Hotel because of my mother’s love of Fairmont Hotels, and because of her amazing internet sleuthing skills when it comes to finding great hotel prices. We then headed into The Terrance, a nice little lounge and bar, for a drink. And this is when I learned, much to both my mother’s and my horror that, at 20, unlike in Canada, I am not of legal drinking age in the US. Thank goodness the server recognized the error and chalked it up to a simple mistake. Just imagine the headline “Tiny Canadian Girl Shuts Down Renowned Lounge and Bar for Serving Alcohol to Underage Minors.” That would have been bad. For dinner, we went to Shuckers, a well-known seafood restaurant attached to the hotel, and I had some of the tastiest fish and chips and THE BEST chocolate cake. Like ever. Ever ever.

On Tuesday, I got us very lost in downtown Seattle when I took a wrong turn. We ended up down near the courthouse but eventually we found our way back to the hotel, and then set out for Pike Place Market. The market was unlike anything I had ever seen, so many stores selling anything you could think of and all the walkways clogged with people. We also checked out the Gum Wall, which was an equally cool and gross sight. The Pike Place Market is also home to the first Starbucks so, of course, we went inside and picked up some drinks and a commemorative mug. For lunch, we stopped into Beecher’s, a local cheese maker, and had the best freshly made macaroni and cheese I have ever tried. I don’t know what import laws say about bringing American cheese across the Canadian border but I didn’t want to test it so I unfortunately did not fill my suitcase with the Beecher’s Flagship cheese. After lunch, we walked to Macy’s and had a quick browse before purchasing some incredibly warm and foldable down coats and heading off to Zara. Tuesday night my mother and I both checked an item off our bucket list: I got to see a National Baseball League game, the Seattle Mariners against the New York Yankees, and my mother got to see the Yankees play. The game started out slow but then the Yankees pulled way ahead of the Mariners, eventually beating them 5-1. A minor item on my bucket list was also checked off: eat a stadium hot dog and scoot by people to get to my seat while holding it. I have seen so many characters in movies do it that I just had to do it once. And I did. The hotdog was pretty tasty too.

We kicked off Wednesday morning with an early trip out to see the Space Needle. Apparently it completes one rotation every 47 minutes and, though I don’t want to sound like one of those people who claim to have superhuman perception, I feel like my sensitivity to motion was enough to feel it actually move so I got a little queasy. It was hands-down the best aerial view of the city and well worth the admission. We then made our way back to the hotel for Afternoon Tea, a lovely tradition we indulge in on our all trips together. The 1907 blend was classic and flavourful, and the first course of berries was divine. There were some strange flavour combinations in items on the tea tier though, such as a beet macaroon. Full of tea and goodies, we headed out to Nordstrom, an American department store I have always wanted to see because luxury brands like Louboutin and Prada are next to Highstreet brands like Guess and Vince Camuto. I fell in love with a $1000 pair of Vêtements platform boots and kept trying them on but there was no way I could afford them (now on the hunt for a dupe). We also visited Barnes & Noble, a bookstore I have heard so much about but never seen. It surpassed all my expectations and I picked up the September issue of Vogue. We then explored Pacific Place which turned out to be less exciting than I had hoped but it had a Kate Spade store and I spent a good hour in there talking to the lovely sales associate about Kate Spade’s retirement and the sale of the company, and how awesome some of the styles are (a cruise ship purse, for instance). To finish off the day we ordered macaroni and cheese, French fries, and cake from room service as a meal bundle. (I ended up keeping the cake in the fridge overnight and eating it at the pier the following morning because I know what a balanced breakfast is).

We left Seattle Thursday afternoon, but not before enjoying an amazing breakfast at The Georgian, yet another restaurant in the hotel. I had the to-die-for eggs benedict, which kept me going for the whole day (until the chocolate cake, that is, but I couldn’t bear to throw it out).

All in all, this was a fun and exciting little getaway before my mother and I go back to school and work, but I will definitely be hitting up the gym in my first week of classes to work off all the food I consumed. No idea why, but I always eat way more on vacation than I ever would at home.

Beach Day Wish List

Good morning all!!!spring logo

About two weeks ago, I was contacted by someone from Spring, an online store inspired by the boutiques lining Spring Street in New York. Featuring items from over 900 brands, tons of sale prices, and a range of prices from under $75 to over $500, this is an amazing online resource to find great sales on clothes, accessories, beauty, and lifestyle items. I was asked to write a post about my clothing and accessory must-haves for the beach this season and, after browsing several items and brands, I wanted to share with you what I would love to wear and bring to the beach.

Ted Baker CYCCON Encyclopaedia Floral Small Shopper Bag-Ivory

To start, this Ted Baker shopper bag would be the cutest beach tote. I love the floral pattern and the square shape, plus the internal pocket would be the perfect place to zip away a bit of money in case an ice cream truck drove by. While this bag is quite small, it would be just the right size to bring everything with me, right down to a water bottle to stay hydrated and a good book to read. And, of course, all my other beach must-haves included in this post. img_1760With weeks of hot sunny summer days ahead, a hat is a definite must-have for a beach day, especially if your skin is porcelain white like mine. This Me to We Boater Hat is such an adorable style with the statement black ribbon trim against the simplistic wide brim design, plus Me to We donates a portion of each purchase cost to Free the Children, a charity that seeks break the cycle of poverty in developing countries. So, this hat does so much more than shade my face from the sun.

Quay Australia Give and Take Back Sunglasses

These sunglasses are from a brand I had never heard of before going through all of the sunglasses available from Spring’s accessory store, but I think I would really enjoy them. The subtle cat-eye shape and tinted lenses give them a timeless chic look, and I would expect them to flatter a wide variety of face shapes. Most importantly, these sunglasses offer 100% UV protection to keep eyes safe when out in the sun, especially if by the water.

Now, when it comes to clothes to wear and bring to the beach, I went a little crazy and selected a whole bunch of options because there were so many lovely clothing items. While browsing the online store, I discovered the brand Genuine People and absolutely fell in love with their designs, especially these rompers. I couldn’t pick which one I would wear to the beach, so I just included them all to showcase how gorgeous they are and illustrate why I had such a difficult time deciding on just one.

French Connection Dotty Sheer Flared Shirt Dress

Now, in case I wanted to pack a romper to wear over my swimsuit at the end of the beach day, I would probably wear a dress like this French Connection one. The style is adorable, and I love the sheer white fabric with raised dot effect. Plus, it is lined. The scalloped trim peter pan collar and scalloped edging on half button-through placket adds to the cuteness of the style, and the gentle pleating at skirt makes the fit and flare dress even more flattering. In addition, the three-quarter length sleeves is perfect for summer weather. This dress falls just above the knee, and could be worn with white converse, black flats, flip flops, or heels for a summer dinner or barbeque. The only cons to this dress are that it is 100% polyester, which is not nearly as breathable as cotton, and is dry clean only.

I could also opt for a shirt and shorts combo to wear to the beach, in which case I would wear something like this super cute Genuine People Back Bow Tie Striped Blouse, which is made of a breathable cotton blend, and is unlined to keep it light and flouncy. The gathered bottom and sleeves are such adorable finishing touches, and I love the huge bow tie at the back.

The shorts I would most likely pair with this shirt would be the Kendall + Kylie Washed Black Cuffed Denim Mom Shorts. Since the comeback of high waisted denim a few years back, I have been loving how flattering it is, and I haven’t really gone back to hip-hugging bottoms. These shorts hit a very flattering part of the leg, and the rolled-up cuffs give them a playful vibe.

Swimsuits are something I really struggle to purchase because I feel like they never fit quite right and they are not usually very flattering. This suit, however, is such a gorgeous modern take on the classic bikini that I would give it a try. The parallel double straps and brass coin bling at the ends of the centre tie give this ever-chic black polka dot swimsuit a but of an edgy look. The low-rise fit and extra long adjustable side ties help to make the bottom piece fit as well as possible, also featuring antique brass coins at the ends of the ties. Both the top and the bottom are fully lined, and are made from a unique Lycra blend fabric. The top features removable padding, and the bottom is available in both Full cut and True Brazilian cut.

And now for shoes. I selected one pair of flats and one pair of sandals because I typically wear one or both of these styles to the beach. The flats are great shoes to wear if I am spreading out a blanket on the sand and sitting in the shade of a beach umbrella reading a book, but the sandals are far more practical if I am planning to go anywhere near the water. I think both of these styles would look lovely with any of the outfits above, but I would have to narrow down my choices if I wanted to get everything into my one beach tote.  What items are on your beach day wish list??? What’s in My Bag??? Summer Edition

The other week, my best friend and I took a trip to the beach and the light of the setting sun through a log fort shone perfectly on my bag. This got me thinking that I have never done a what’s in my bag post. I love reading other people’s posts like this, so I wanted to try my hand at it. Plus, making collages on Polyvore is always fun.

Let me know in the comments below what your must-haves are in your summer bag 😊😊

Disneyland Paris

When planning out this Paris trip, Disneyland Paris was near the top of my list of things I wanted to do. I have been to the Disneyland in California, so I was interested to see which rides were also in this park, and if and how they had been changed. Plus, knowing all the characters would be speaking French was an added bonus.

I did not take as many pictures as I’d like, but I figured the limited number of pictures speaks to how much fun it was. I hope you enjoy 🙂 🙂

Clinique Summer 2015 Haul and Bonus Time

Well, Clinique’s bonus time is back at Hudson’s Bay!!! This meant that I stopped in to my nearest Clinique counter to try out some new products and received a lovely little bag of goodies as well.

IMG_5052The first item I picked up was Clinique’s Pretty Easy Liquid Eyelining Pen. I haven’t used one of these in years, but there is no time like the present to try out an eyeliner pen again. It has a really fine tip, which makes creating thin lines super easy. It also comes in dark brown, and that would be great for a more natural look. I have been loving it the past few days, and should have a review of it up sometime this week.

The other item I picked up was Clinique’s All About Shadow 8-Pan Palette in Wear Everywhere Neutrals. I have been wanting to try this for so long, but I often struggle to justify the purchase of an eyeshadow palette. I get that they are a money saver and are great for traveling, but they usually have colours in them that I just can’t see myself using. This palette is different though. The 8 colours are absolutely gorgeous and are perfect for any neutral daily make up look, or a more toned down night look. I will be using these religiously come back to school time. I will be reviewing this product on this blog as well, so expect swatches of all the colours, and maybe even a few look ideas.

IMG_5042Because I bought these things, I received this adorable cosmetic bag full of lovely little beauty items. I have amassed quite a collection of these bonus gifts, but I still love getting them, because they are such a neat way to try out products in sample sizes, as well as retain a supply of products you love. For instance, I have never had to buy mascara, because I just live off the sample sized ones that come in these bonuses.

I won’t go through all of the items in this bonus gift, but there are a few that I wanted to spotlight for how amazing they are.

IMG_5044The first is the Chubby Stick Intense Moisturizing Lip Colour Balm in the shade Mightiest Maraschino. When chubby sticks first came out, I didn’t know how to feel about them, and I waited until they put one in a bonus to try it out. I ended up loving it, and so when the lip colour balms started going into the bonuses, I was on board for that. This one has such a rich tawny red colour, and it is chalked full  of mango and shea butters to keep lips hydrated. I don’t really know how to describe the finish: it’s not sheer, but it’s not matte; it’s kind of in between. I wore this on Canada Day and it lasted all day and night, plus it matched the flag rather nicely.

IMG_5047The next item I want to talk about is the Lash Doubling Mascara. This is not the one I traditionally use (usually the high impact mascara comes with the bonuses), but it works really well, and leaves my eyelashes looking really long and full, without clumping or crumbling off during the day. I have tried this one before, but I am saving up these little ones so that when I go traveling, I can take some in my carry on so that if my luggage goes missing (and it will thanks to Air Canada) at least I’ll have a few make up essentials to see me through.

IMG_5045

The last item I want to feature is the Quickliner for Eyes Intense. This, too, is a new addition to the bonus, but it is rather lovely. I really don’t like eyeliner pencils–in fact I hate them. I find them really painful to apply, they don’t go on smoothly or evenly, and they smudge and fade throughout the day. So, I basically go for any eyeliner that isn’t a pencil and that I don’t have to sharpen. This one has a really silky formula so it goes on smoothly and doesn’t fade. This sample did not come with the smudger end like the regular product does, but it is easy enough to smudge if you want to early on after application. This type of eyeliner also comes in 12 really cool shades, ranging from the traditional black and brown to colours like green and purple and blue and even peridot.

What Clinique products have you been loving lately???

Thank you for stopping by, and I hope you have a lovely day 🙂 🙂
