Kate Spade Surprise Sale 2018

Kate Spade Surprise Sale 2018 BannerOkay, this is a bit of a rushed post, but I hope you’ll forgive me given the news that I bear.

About two weeks ago, my mother phoned me up to tell me of a Kate Spade New York surprise sale, where bags, apparel, shoes, and accessories were up to 75% off. You read that right: 75% off. Needless to say, I stocked up on a few things, which actually just came in the mail the past weekend, and are so perfect that I can’t wait to take pictures of them and share them here.

But then my mother phoned this morning to tell me that the surprise sale is back. I repeat, the surprise up to 75% off Kate Spade New York sale is back. This is the perfect place to pick up that bag that you’ve been ogling for months and waiting for it to go on sale, or to get some Christmas presents for the fashion lovers in your life.

Now, I know that price ranges are relative and some of the reduced prices on some of the items might still be out of range, but when I saw the purse I had fallen for on the website for $149 instead of $359 with the matching wallet, I was beyond excited. Merry Christmas to me.

The sale is on for another two days and can be found here. For most items, you don’t need to enter a promo code; the price will automatically change to the sale price in your shopping bag. There is, however, a bundle shop that you can nose through and see bags and their matching wallets for seriously reduced prices.

I am in exams for the rest of this week, but when I get home, stay tuned for a post all about what I picked up at this sale. And please share with me in the comments below if you get anything Kate Spade. It is one of my favourite brands, and I love seeing what other people like from her.

Happy shopping!!!

My Holiday Budget for Happiness

As a university student, I take budgeting pretty seriously. While I was fortunate enough to receive a four-year scholarship for my undergraduate study, I still want to make sure I have an emergency fund, and that I am spending responsibly. Particularly around the holidays, my spending can get a little out of control as I go on the hunt for Christmas presents for family and friends, but I have a holiday gift guide/budget plan that minimizes overspending and maximizes happiness.

Setting Limits

Each month, any incoming money is divided into separate accounts for living, saving, and emergency. It is important for me to set an overall spending limit of my savings on presents, as well as price caps on gifts for each person so I know going in how much I am going to spend.

Resist the Call of the Red Starbucks Cup

This one is so hard for me, especially around the holidays when the Christmas cups come out and my favourite drink, the peppermint mocha, is officially back, but this is an easy cost cutter. While I am by no means a daily drink purchaser, I still think that saving money in little ways like this can amount to big savings at the end of the year. That being said, I do treat myself to the odd one though, and maybe even a frosted snowman cookie.

Gift Experiences, not Items

Something new I have been doing the past few Christmases is gifting someone an experience like a travel voucher for a weekend getaway, a certificate for an adventure like camping or zipining, or even something simple like a dinner out together. This really helps with coming up with gift ideas, plus I find the memories last longer than giving someone an item that won’t last as long.

Homemade Presents

The past month or so, I have fallen in love with Pinterest and all its Christmas knitting patterns. One in particular that I think is just adorable is for little stocking christmas tree decorations. I have made about 7 so far in various colours and patterns and I am planning to give them to my family members, particularly my grandparents who, at ages 86 and 87 don’t need clutter but would love something sentimental.

Homegrown Gifts

While I am not much of a gardener myself, people like my grandparents gift jam made from raspberries they grew themselves and small spice plants, and other people I know gift handmade candles from backyard bee hive wax. I think this is such a nice way to gift something special and useful while not having to go out and battle the shopping malls.

Essentials and Splurges

Instead of trying to think of unique gift ideas for people, think about what they use on a daily basis like a particular beauty product and gift that. Some might say this is unimaginative, but it is guaranteed that the gift will be loved, appreciated, and used. Another great gift idea is purchasing something that you know someone would like but would never buy for themselves. These splurge purchases make such nice surprises and show that you were paying attention, plus stores usually have really good sales going on so you can scoop up splurges at fractions of the original price.

Gifts From All of Us

I remember as a kid thinking that a group present was just a way for people to get off the hook for finding someone a unique present, but really it is genius. Luckily my grandparents don’t have Internet so I don’t have to worry about ruining the surprise for my grandfather, but my mother and grandmother and I all pitched in and bought him a DVD recorder that he can use to convert his 800 or so VHS tapes to DVD format. While this item was more pricy and well over the price cap the family set for presents, pooling our money and getting him a nifty gift like this that he will get so much use out of is a great way to save money and give a gift someone will love.

What are some ways that you budget for the holidays while maximizing happiness???

It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas . . .

Goodness me, I have been a real naughty and haven’t published a single post in December thus far and it’s almost half over!!! Ha, looks like Blogmas isn’t happening this year.

In my defence, school ended on on the 2nd, and then I had finals on the 5th, 7th, and 10th. But now I have a bit of a reprieve until the 19th when I write my last exam. Regardless of what courses I take or how much planning I do, I always, always, always end up writing an exam on the last day of exam period. Does this happen to any of you???

Christmastime this year was heralded by something that hasn’t happened in my city for years: snowfall. And not just the old 1cm light dusting that is washed away by rain the next day. I am talking about 10cm, covering the ground, people driving like right fools on the roads despite the ice and snow warnings, and snow people on everyone’s front lawns. Despite the fact that I live in Canada, snow is not common in my city, so this was a lovely surprise to wake up to. I wish I was a more artsy photographer but I am hoping to learn some tips and tricks in the new year, and I had to snap a few pictures of the gorgeous white blanket:

Blogmas Day 23: Winter Birthdays

blogmasbannerGreetings lovely readers, and welcome to the 23rd day of Blogmas on Literary and Lovely!!!

Today, my family and I celebrated two very special birthdays: that of my grandfather, and that of my mother. My grandfather turned 86, and my mother, well . . . we don’t talk about her age. Almost everyone in my family was born in a winter month, with my birthday in November, my mother, grandfather, and aunt born in December, and my grandmother born in January, so we try to group celebrations together on certain days to make it easier for more of the family to attend the party.

My grandmother decided to make a sunshine yellow cake, which was both pretty and pretty delicious. However, we did encounter a small problem with the candles. Clearly “they don’t make them like they used to” in the words of my grandparents, because the candles melted right into the cake and actually pooled into a big, waxy mess. We didn’t even have them lit that long, which was disappointing. We ended up having to pluck bits of wax off the cake, but it was still just as tasty, albeit a bit bare in spots.

Blogmas Day 19: Christmas Sweaters

blogmasbannerGood afternoon all, and happy 19th day of Blogmas!!!

For me, one of the many steps of getting into the Christmas spirit is finding the perfect obnoxious Christmas sweater. I’m talking giant snowflakes, lights, and maybe even a button that, when pushed, plays Christmas music. So today I thought I would round up some of the cutest Christmas sweaters I have stumbled upon on the Internet thus far. I found all these on Polyvore from various retailers, but most are around the $40 price range. Hope you enjoy them!!!

Blogmas Day 18: I’m Dreaming of a Christmas Dinner . . .

blogmasbannerHello there lovely readers, and happy 18th day of Blogmas!!!

By this time, many of us have laid out our plans for Christmas Day, whether these include a dinner with family, a party with friends, or a swim in the pool at some tropical island resort. Each year, I spend Christmas Day at my grandparents’ house, opening presents, snacking on some baked goodies, and, of course, indulging in the coveted Christmas turkey dinner.

food2013

This is the delicious feast that awaits my family and I on Christmas Day. My grandmother starts getting the vegetables ready early in the morning, and then the rest of the family comes over in the afternoon to help prepare everything else. Fun fact: the pan that we use to cook the turkey in has been in my family for 5 generations!!! It was my grandfather’s grandmother’s turkey pan, and it has done over 100 years of turkeys.

Our Christmas dinner typically includes carrots, corn, potatoes, broccoli and cauliflower, peas, homemade buns, stuffing and, of course, turkey and gravy. My grandfather makes the gravy from scratch and it is beyond divine. I swear, I could eat mashed potatoes and my grandfather’s turkey gravy every day and not get sick of it; it is that good.

I love having Christmas dinner with my nearest and dearest, but since not all of my family members can be in town on Christmas Day, we all sit in the living room after dinner and phone those who could not make it to wish them all the best, and thank them for the lovely presents they mailed out.

In the days following Christmas, the leftovers from the giant turkey dinner are combined to make turkey casserole, which is easily my favourite food ever. Plus, then there’s turkey soup to look forward to.

What does your family do on Christmas Day???

Blogmas Day 17: The Little Christmas Tree

2013

Good morning all!!!

Today is the day that I will be putting up my Christmas tree!!! As you can see from the picture above from last Christmas, my tree by no means resembles the stereotypical massive Christmas tree. I stand at 5′ 1/2″ (yes, that half-inch makes all the difference) and I like being able to put the tree topper on without having to get a chair and lean into the tree, running the risk that I will lean over too far and fall into it (which did happen one year). So, this little 5′ Christmas tree graces our living room every year. We used to do the whole real Christmas tree thing, but a few years ago we decided to switch to an artificial one after an unfortunate incident where the whole tree toppled over and water soaked into the carpet. So this little tree will be set up later today, and all of our interior Christmas decorations will be put up.

When do you usually put up your Christmas tree???

P.S. Don’t forget to enter my Christmas giveaway here until December 24th at 11:59pm!!!
