Make Up For Ever Matte Velvet Skin Liquid and Powder Foundations

Make Up For Ever Matte Velvet Skin Liquid and Powder Foundations

Hello friends!!!

I can’t remember the last time I did a product review, which likely means it was quite awhile ago at a time when grad school didn’t feel quite so demanding. I definitely felt he pressure this term, balancing classes and a clinical externship, but they were good reminders of why I wanted to get into speech-language pathology. Another area of interest of mine is makeup, and today I wanted to review two Make Up For Ever foundation products.

Matte Velvet Skin Blurring Powder Foundation

I fell in love with the MUFE Pro Finish Multi-Use Powder Foundation shortly after its release (which I believe was in 2013), and it was my holy grail powder foundation until it vanished off the market earlier this year. I was devastated, and then stumbled upon the Matte Velvet Skin Blurring Powder Foundation. Hopeful that it was the replacement for the multi-use powder I was mourning, I gave it a go.

MUFE Matte Velvet Skin Blurring Powder FoundationThe packaging is nice, with the powder and applicator sponge housed in a sleek, rectangular, matte, black tin. My main concern at first glance was that only half of the tin contains product, unlike the multi-use powder, which filled an entire circular pan and had the applicator sponge beneath it in a separate compartment of the compact. However, a weight comparison indicated that the circular compact was 10g, with a net product amount of 0.35oz, while the rectangular tin was 11g, and housed 0.38oz of product. In short, the new blurring powder foundation actually contains 0.03oz more product, but the packaging is deceiving as to how much product is actually included. Product amounts aside, what I especially love about this product is that a mirror fills the entire lid of the tin. Another fun packaging feature is that the tin is lever-activated. In other words, there’s no way for it to pop open in a makeup bag if it gets jostled around in a purse or during travel; it will only open if the lever is pressed and the lid is lifted. The only downside of the packaging  I can foresee is that, because the exterior is a matte surface, fingerprints and makeup substances may cling to it, but should easily come off with makeup remover, or even simply warm water.

Phew, after that long preamble about the packaging, here are some features of the product itself:

  1. Full coverage
  2. Buildable coverage
  3. Mate finish
  4. Blurring effect (smoothes and mattifies, reducing pores and absorbing oil)
  5. Amino acid- coated pigments offer water-resistant 12-hour wear
  6. No fading, caking, or flaking
  7. Suitable for all skin types, but especially good for use with combination to oily skin
  8. Formulated with MUFE’s unique Flexi-fit puzzle complex that allows for flexible coverage and lightweight feel
  9. Double-sided applicator sponge for sheer to full coverage
  10. Available in 30 shades

Now, not that availability, or lack thereof, is indicative of a product’s quality, but I had a devil of a time getting my hands on my shade in this powder. It had been sold out on the Sephora website for months, but I lucked out and found it at the Pacific Centre Sephora in downtown Vancouver while shopping with my boyfriend. I settled on the shade R210 Pink Alabaster. While it is always better to see a product in person to confirm that the shade is right for you, I especially recommend doing that with this product. Online, R210 looked much darker than what I would imagine ‘Pink Alabaster’ to look like, but it was listed as the lightest shade, and it wasn’t until I saw it in Sephora that I realized it was indeed my perfect shade.

Now, I am not usually one for using applicators that come with products, but the sponge that comes with this product was actually specially designed to offer application flexibility. The black sponge side picks up more product, and is intended to provide a more full coverage look. In comparison, the white velvet side picks up less product, allowing for a more sheer coverage. Something to note is that the applicator sponge retains a lot of product, and it can be hard to get even product distribution on the sponge. If sponges really aren’t your thing, the powder can also be applied with a brush. Of course, MUFE recommends their branded 124 powder kabuki brush, but I’m sure any powder foundation brush would offer the same precise buildable coverage. (Side note, I do own the 124 kabuki brush and it is really great, but also really pricy at $42).

Matte Velvet Skin Full Coverage Foundation

Now this product I did not actually pick out myself. My mother has been on the hunt for a new foundation for several months now (R.I.P Almay TruBlend), and every time she buys a new foundation to try, I sneak in and try it too, and I wanted to share my thoughts.

Features of this foundation include:

  1. Breathable and full-coverage
  2. Matte finish
  3. Up to 24 hours of wear
  4. Suitable for normal, dry, oily, and combination skin
  5. Reduces shine
  6. No fading, caking, or flaking
  7. Formulated with MUFE’s unique Flexi-fit puzzle complex that allows for flexible coverage and lightweight feel
  8. Available in 40 shades

I purchased (or rather, my mother did) the shade R210 Pink Alabaster, which just so happened to be the same shade as the powder foundation I had been on the hunt for for months. The formula is on the watery side, and feels thin, but it applies and blends really well, either with a brush or a beauty blender. It does have a bit of a chemical-like smell to it, and I’m not sure what ingredient or ingredient combination creates that smell, but it’s a little off-putting. It’s nothing major though, and you might not even notice it if you aren’t super sensitive to smells like I am.

I did a wear test across a few days, and noticed that, while the foundation held up well for the most part, there was some drying around my nose, and my skin started to show through. This was easily fixable though with a quick touch up with the blurring powder, but I don’t like to pack makeup around in my purse to fix my makeup during the day. Who has time for that???

So those are my thoughts on the Make Up For Ever Make Velvet Skin Foundation collection. Let me know in the comments below if you have tried either of these products, and your thoughts on them!!!

Clinique Autumn 2018 Bonus Time

Hello all!!!

After a long wait, Clinique has released their autumn bonus, and I rushed out to pick one up after I saw it advertised in the Hudson’s Bay flyer. I have no idea what happened this spring, but I seemed to completely miss the bonus release, so my list of products to shop for has been growing since last autumn.

To qualify for this bonus, I picked up two shades of the newly released Matte Pop Lip Shadow that I wanted to try. Stay tuned for a full review of the lip shadows on the blog soon.

The two choices for this bonus were Eyes, or Lips and Cheeks. Because I am terrible at making decisions, I got the Eyes bonus first and have since sent away for the Lips and Cheeks one as well, along with a few of my holy-grail products I have run out of.

The Eyes bonus includes:

  • Kapitza makeup bag
  • Quickliner for Eyes Intense
  • All About Shadow Duo Slider in Strawberry Fudge
  • Moisturizing Lip Colour Balm in Super Strawberry
  • High Impact Black Chubby Stick Mascara
  • Rinse-Off Foaming Cleanser
  • Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion +

Sometimes I use these bonuses as a chance to try out new products before investing in a full size, but this bonus is filled with trial sizes of a bunch of my tried and true favourites. I was especially excited that the eyeshadow in this bonus was the Strawberry Fudge duo since it was one of the first Clinique duos I ever owned, and it feels so nostalgic to own it again. Plus, the brown shade is a near-perfect match to my eyebrows and makes for a great brow filler in a pinch.

Also, this Kapitza bag is gorgeous, and it’s the perfect antidote to the dreary rainy weather Vancouver has been getting lately. I have so many of these bags but this one struck me as extra pretty, so right after I took the photo for this post, I moved all my makeup into it.

All in all, I am very happy with this bonus, and I can’t wait for the Lips and Cheeks bonus to arrive in the next few days.

What Clinique products have you been loving lately???

Life Update August 2018

Good morning all.

Aside from my Montréal Travel Diary that I posted back in March, my blog and social media have been all but abandoned for the past couple of months, and I wanted to dedicate a post to updating you all about my life.

I applied to graduate school back in February, and at the end of March I received my acceptance letter to the University of British Columbia’s Masters of Science in Speech-Language Pathology program. I am really excited for this new chapter of my life, but it means I’ll be moving to Vancouver and leaving my hometown behind, which scares me when I think about it too much.

At the same time I received this news, my grandmother’s health was rapidly declining and she was admitted to the hospital on Easter Monday. My mother and I visited her everyday and held her hands as she died six days later. My grandmother was, and still is, one of the strongest and kindest women I know and I can only hope that I become half the woman she was.

A week later, I flew out to Calgary, needing to get away from everything for a little while. And who do you think I saw there? If you guessed Scavenger Hunt Boy who I met in Montréal, you’d be right. His name is Mike, by the way. I spent eight days with him in his hometown of Calgary, exploring all the tourist spots and even venturing to Banff and Lake Louise. Mike is the light at the end of the proverbial tunnel to me, and makes me happier than I thought I deserved to be. I met him when I was at my lowest following a devastating heartbreak, and he has shown me only kindness and patience as I process it and move on. If heartbreak was the price of meeting him, I would pay it ten times over.

Once I got back, I started full-time work at my summer job, and that has taken up the vast majority of my time.

At the end of June, I graduated university with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with a Minor in Linguistics, and immediately started planning out grad school in Vancouver. Real-estate is brutal as it is, and finding somewhere to live in Vancouver is near-impossible. I ended up finding an apartment and moved in at the end of July (stay tuned for an apartment tour post).

Then in August, I attended the North American Parkour Championships with Mike, and even learned a little bit of Parkour myself. The biggest takeaways from that weekend were that 1) I have a lot more muscles in my body than I ever felt before, 2) everyone who practices Parkour (called traceurs) has insanely sculpted abs, and 3) there really needs to be an online resource for people whose significant others do Parkour, something like “So, Your Boyfriend Does Parkour – Now What?” This is still a work-in-progress title though, because there are so many amazingly talented female traceurs and the resource would also be for male partners looking to understand the practice a little better. While I don’t think I’ll ever be NAPC-level, I think it could be fun to try out some Parkour sometime. After all, I have the perfect teacher.

In recent months, I have also gotten much more into bullet journaling, and instead of crowding up my instagram feed with journal spreads, I decided to create a new account @literaryandlovelydoodles for all of my bullet journaling and art, so you can follow me over there if you’d like 🙂 🙂

Finally, In 7 days and counting, I will start grad school and I am simultaneously excited and nervous. This is an incredible new chapter of my life, but it means leaving the old ones behind, and I have never been very good at letting go. With this new chapter beginning, I want to keep up with blogging. I’ve never been very good at sticking to one topic though, so bear with me as my content goes from beauty product hauls and reviews, to book hauls and reviews, to fashion lookbooks, to bullet journal spreads, to university life, to wherever else I decide to take it. When life gives you choices, I like to select e) all of the above (I am aware I already have 5 options listed above but the phrase doesn’t work with selecting f – just go with me on this one).

So here’s to a (hopefully) great academic year and a fresh start on this blog. Whether you have been with me since yesterday or since the very beginning, thank you for your love and support. It means the world to me. Sorry again for my absence, but I promise I am back for good this time.

Clinique Fall 2017 Bonus Time

Good morning everyone!!!

I have missed blogging SO MUCH these past few months, and now that university has started up again and I was a complete fool and enrolled in 6 courses, my time has been monopolized by studying and work. But Clinique released their Fall 2017 bonus recently, and I have been dying to gush about it.

To qualify for this bonus, I picked up a Take The Day Off Makeup Remover for Lids, Lashes & Lips, along with a Clinique Happy Gelato Cream in Berry Blush.

This bonus includes:

  • Moisture Surge Extended Thirst Relief
  • Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion+
  • High Impact Mascara
  • All About Shadow/Blush Palette in Sunrise or Sunset
  • Chubby Lip Balm
  • Clinique Happy Perfume
  • Clinique x Jonathan Adler cosmetics bag

This bonus offered two colour collection choices, Sunrise (left) and Sunset (right), featuring different chubby sticks and eyeshadow and blush shades. Sunrise included an All About Shadow/Blush Palette in Foxier + Mink, and Cupid, and a Chubby Lip Colour Balm in Mega Melon. Sunset included an All About Shadow/Blush Palette in Like Like Mink, and Sunset Glow, and a Chubby Lip Colour Balm in Super Strawberry.

Despite the amazing shades of this bonus, my favourite part if definitely the three-dimensional geometric tiled cosmetic bag, designed by Jonathan Adler, the American potter, designer, and author. All of his designs are modern yet chic, and I would love to have them in my home.

What Clinique products are you bringing out this autumn???

Maybelline Lash Sensational Mascara

Maybelline Lash Sensational MascaraWhy hello there 🙂 🙂

April is always a crazy month with university classes ending and final exams starting, but the end of this term seemed extra hectic. I don’t know if it was all the group projects or the massive papers but it felt like April dragged on for far too long. Don’t get me wrong, I love what I am studying, but by the end of classes I am ready for a break and my exams went right until the second-to-last day of exam period. I have missed blogging and I am so happy to be getting back to it with a post about my new go-to mascara.

Way back in September 2016, I published a drug store haul post and this mascara was included. I put it in a box of products to try and unearthed it about a month ago, figuring I should give it a go. Well boy am I glad I did!!!
Features

  1. New oil-infused liquid formula to define lashes
  2. Layer-Reveal brush with 10 bristle layers reaches all lashes
  3. Ophthalmologist-tested and safe for contact lense wearers
  4. Available in three shades: Blackest Black, Very Black, and Brownish Black
  5. Drugstore price tag
  6. Fun fact: This mascara was also the official mascara of London Fashion Week.

Maybelline Lash Sensational Mascara brush First of all, the brush is pretty darn skookum. The curved shape makes it possible to apply from root to tip and the bristle layers grab all the lashes and lengthen them.

The formula is also really smooth, glides on well, and it can be layered. Plus, it feels really leightweight on my eyelashes. Over the course of the day, it does not smudge, flake, or transfer to my undereyes, not even if I accidentally forget to take my makeup off at night and end up sleeping with it on. It still looks just as good the next day. I wouldn’t recommend that, but it’s a good test of how durable the product is.

The only negative comment I have about this mascara is that it is extremely hard to remove completely. I typically use Clinique’s Take the Day Off Makeup Remover for Lids, Lashes, and Lips, and maybe another remover works better, but I find I can only get the surface product off, and I wake up the next morning with goopy remnants on my lashes that crumble off throughout the following day. Even using more remover does not seem to do much. Let me know in the comments if any of you have used this mascara and have a great technique for getting it off because it makes my lashes look amazing and I want to keep using it.

The jury is still out regarding whether this mascara has overtaken Clinique’s High Impact Mascara as my favourite mascara, but it is definitely a good contender for that title in my makeup bag.

Have you tried this product before??? What did you think of it???

Clinique Spring 2017 Bonus Time

Good morning all!!!

It feels like it has been so long since Clinique last came out with a bonus, so I was really excited to head down to my local mall and stock up on all my favourite products.

To qualify for this bonus, I picked up a Pretty Easy Liquid Eyelining Pen, which I absolutely adore and reviewed here, and a Long Last Soft Matte Lipstick in the shade Matte Plum that I reviewed here way back in 2015.

This bonus includes:

  • Cosmetics bag
  • Moisture Surge Extended Thirst Relief
  • Chubby Lash Fattening Mascara in Jumbo Jet
  • All About Shadow Duo
  • Long Last Lipstick
  • Rinse-Off Foaming Cleanser
  • Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion +

The colour collection choices available for this bonus were Spring Pinks and Spring Nudes, which have different shades of eyeshadow, blush, and lipstick. I went with the pinks, which included the lipstick shade Ginger Flower, the Like Milk eyeshadow duo, and Sunset Glow blush.

The Chubby Lash Fattening Mascara is a new addition to the bonus and, while I love the High Impact Volume Mascara that is usually included, I am really looking forward to trying out this formula and brush.

I have also read raving reviews of the Moisture Surge Extended Thirst Relief, and with summer fast-approaching, my skin will need all the hydration it can get.

Finally, the cosmetics bag is such a vibrant shade of pink and the citrus fruit slices make it perfect for summer. I think I am going to use it to organzize my sun products so that I can just toss it in a tote bag for a day at the beach.

Being in the thick of dreary, rainy winter days really takes its toll on me and my skin. Don’t get me wrong, I love jumping in rain puddles, seeing my breath in the mornings, and praying for snow, but my skin doesn’t appreciate the cold weather. That’s where this mask comes in as the ultimate winter pick-me-up.

Features

  1. Comprised of orange, lemon, and clementine extracts
  2. Contains a proprietary complex of vitamins C, E, and B5, along with revitalizing minerals
  3. Contains AHA fruit acids that exfoliate and smooth skin
  4. Suitable for sensitive skin
  5. Citrus jam texture
  6. Smells incredible

I use this product twice per week, on Sundays and Wednesdays after my morning skin cleansing regime. As directed, I apply a generous amount with gentle circular motions, then leave it on my face for around 10 minutes while I catch up on some blog reading. I typically remove it with some warm water and a face towel, but I have heard a cotton pad works just as well.

The best way I can describe how lovely this product is is to say that it leaves my skin clear, bright, and glowing, all the things I want my skin to be in winter. My complexion has also become much smoother and even, and my skin feels so healthy and soft after use and for the next few days until I use it again.  An added bonus is how amazing this product smells. The dominant smell is freshly cut oranges and clementines, but the hints of lemon give it a slightly tart scent. The combination wakes me right up in the mornings, energizing me and my skin.

One thing that surprised me about this product the first time I used it was the thick pieces of citrus in the jam-like mask. I had initially expected a smoother texture, but the pieces actually help in exfoliating and speak to just how natural this product is.

This is definitely a splurge purchase at CAN $80 for the 100mL jar, but it is so worth it.

The Versatile Blogger Award

The Versatile Blogger Award logoOh my goodness, this nomination completely took me by surprise, and added a lovely bright spot to a day of studying in the library for round two of university midterms. Incidentally, I have just got through this round of tests, so now I can actually write the post without fear of sneaking little linguistic facts into it to show my learning progress.

Thank you to Nicole Ilene at Sorry, I’m Booked for nominating me for this award; if you haven’t read her blog before, I would recommend having a gander. She is such a lovely person and writes about so many different things.  The rules of this award are:

  1. Thank the person who nominated you.
  2. Share the award on your blog.
  3. Share seven random facts about yourself.
  4. Tag 10 bloggers with less than 1000 followers and let them know they have been nominated.

Thinking of facts about myself on the spot is always so strange because people can point them out quite easily but I cannot for the life of me come up with something interesting.

  1. I am terrible at coming up with ideas of what to do with friends when we hang out.
  2. I talk a lot. Like a lot. A. Lot.
  3. I really like watching documentaries.
  4. I treat the R and L on my headphones as law.
  5. I can, and do spend countless hours organizing things.
  6. I love watching movies with subtitles, even when they are in English.
  7. My favourite punctuation mark is an ellipsis …

And now for my nominees:

I’m sure some of you have been nominated before, but I have discovered so many amazing blogs recently and I have some favourites that I wanted to highlight 🙂 🙂

NYX Liquid Suede Cream Lipsticks

NYX Cosmetics Liquid Suede Cream LipsticksHappy Sunday all!!!

I haven’t done a review post in quite awhile so I wanted to get back into the groove of things with a review of one of my new favourite products: NYX’s Liquid Suede Cream Lipsticks.  I picked up three shades during my last drug store haul, which you can read here if you’re interested, and since then I have been wearing one of the three almost every day.

Features

  1. Even application
  2. Quick-drying
  3. Matte finish
  4. Lightweight
  5. Waterproof
  6. Fragrance-free
  7. Drugstore price tag
  8. Available in 12 shades, ranging from neutral to bold

One of my biggest concerns about liquid lipstick was whether it would dry out my lips or accentuate any cracking I had, especially during the winter. I have to be honest and say that these lipsticks do dry out my lips more than a traditional lipstick would, but it is nothing to be concerned about. I wouldn’t recommend these to anyone who is prone to having dry lips though, because it could result in further dehydration and flaking. The product also has the tendency to settle into lip lines, so keep that in mind.

I did have to be careful after I first applied it because it does not dry instantly and can easily smudge. It does dry fairly quickly, however, with a completely opaque finish. The application wand allowed me to fill in all of my lips, including the tough-to-reach places like the edges and near the Cupid’s bow. It is really important to fully cover lips though, otherwise it can look patchy and uneven when it dries.

The three shades I purchased are Tea & Cookies (a rose pink), Cherry Skies (a deep wine red), and Vintage (dark plum with mauve undertones).

Swatches

NYX Cosmetics Liquid Suede Cream Lipsticks swatches

I was most impressed with how vibrant the shades are. Some of the shades in the range are definitely for the more adventurous, like the neon purple shade Amethyst, but some of them are absolutely gorgeous pink and nude shades.

I also really like how long-lasting the formula is. I can wear one of the shades for an entire day of classes, which covers at least two meals, snacks, and regular water drinking, without any touch-ups. I find some of the darker shades like Vintage fade slightly at the corners of my mouth as the day goes on, but it is barely noticeable, and can easily and quickly be touched-up.

In short, these liquid lipsticks are the perfect combination of good quality and affordability, and are a great product with which to try out liquid lipstick.

Do you like wearing liquid lipsticks??? Let me know in the comments below 🙂 🙂

Zoella Beauty Sweet Inspirations Unboxing and First Impressions

Zoella Beauty Sweet Inspirations October 2016

Zoella Beauty Sweet Inspirations October 2016 display

Alright, I may be the last person to know this but, myth debunked, Zoella Beauty products are available in Canada. Sort of. Canadian drug stores don’t carry them, but they can be ordered online. Hopefully some other people out there were unaware of this until quite recently, otherwise I just live under a very small rock.

The last two ranges passed me by because of this absurd not-available-in-Canada notion, but this time I jumped on the beauty train and ordered four of products from the new range from Feelunique. The only product unavailable for purchase online was the body mist spray, but I don’t mind one little bit because after a bath and some lotion, I will be smelling like vanilla and macaroons in no time.

In total, this range is comprised of 8 products, all of which smell like vanilla-based sweet macaroons. I think my favourite part about this release is the adorable pastel-coloured French patisserie style packaging. It is almost too beautiful to use. Almost.

I also picked up the Zoella Beauty Winking Beauty Bag, which was released as part of the first range, but I fell in love with it when Zoe first went through the the products, and when I saw it online I immediately added it to my cart. I don’t know if I will use it as a beauty bag, but I think it would be an adorable pencil case.

After purchasing so many Zoella Beauty products, this Sticker Me! Beauty Bag was added to my cart as a free gift. And who doesn’t love free???
