Clinique Winter 2016 Haul and Bonus Time

img_0397

img_0419

Good morning everyone!!!

This is the first Clinique bonus time of 2016, and I could not be more excited. Clinique has a bunch of new products out, such as the Clinique Pop Glaze Sheer Lip Color + Primer, Lid Pop eyeshadows, Pep-Start Eye Cream, Clinique Pop Lacquer Lip Color + Primer, Sweet Pots Sugar Scrub and Lip Balm, and so many more. I wish I could try them all out right now, but my bank balance and I can’t agree on how many are “appropriate,” so we compromised and I picked up two new little goodies to try and qualified for the bonus gift of essential travel-size products.

After much deliberation, I picked out two of Clinique’s newly released Sweet Pots Sugar Scrub and Lip Balms. They are all such lovely colours, but Sweet Rose looks like such a soft pink, and Citron is the ideal clear lip balm that we all want sometimes when we are going with a plain lip look. I have yet to try them, but look out for a review post of these in the next little while because I already know I will be sharing my thoughts on them with you.

And now for the little cosmetic bag of goodies:

img_0406Clinique always has such vibrant cosmetic bags, and this one definitely lives up to that reputation. This one was designed by Kapitza, an East London design studio run by German sisters Nicole and Petra Kapitza. This studio actually conducts experimental research investigating geometric shapes and mathematical formulas. I was never a huge fan of math class, but this is one nifty application of it.

img_0402The qualifier price for this bonus is $31, but it is valued at $85, making it a great reason to wait half the year to stock up on your Clinique favourites. Like many Clinique bonuses, there is a choice involved, which can either be really great or really troubling if, like me, you struggle to make small decisions like what to eat for dinner or, in this case, what lipstick and eyeshadow trio I would like to try this season. I did a review post on Clinique Pop Lip Colour + Primer lipsticks last year, featuring the two shades available for this bonus, which you can read here if you’d like.  Picture 15 This bonus also comes with:

  • Smart Night Custom-Repair Moisturizer, 15 ml
  • Rinse-Off Foaming Cleanser, 30 ml
  • Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion+, 30 ml
  • High Impact Mascara in Black (a personal favourite of mine)

This gift is also paired with a spend more, get more type deal, where you receive a deluxe size of your choice of Moisture Surge Extended Thirst Relief or Moisture Surge Intense Skin Fortifying Hydrator with a purchase of $75 or more. I didn’t go for this offer this go around because I am pretty stocked up on moisturizers and I am really trying to use up all of my sample sizes before I start collecting more.

What bonus times are happening right now where you live???

CoverGirl Ready Set Gorgeous Foundation and Concealer

img_0326Why hello there 🙂 🙂 I stumbled upon this product while rummaging through my makeup stores looking for another trial size of Clinique’s High Impact Extreme Volume Mascara, and I realized I had never tried the foundation before. I sometimes use the concealer underneath my CoverGirl Clean foundation if I have particularly dark circles under my eyes, or if there is a pesky little blemish on my face. I thought about reviewing these products separately, but since they are both from CoverGirl’s instaGLAM collection, I wanted to review them together. So here we go 🙂 🙂

Features:

  1. Built-in “powder system”
  2. Medium coverage
  3. Flawless, natural-looking wear
  4. Oil-free formula
  5. Foundation available in 12 shades; concealer available in 6 shades
  6. Shade-matched concealer with sponge-tipped wand
  7. Drug store price tag

This foundation offers good medium coverage and conceals a multitude of imperfections without looking heavy on the face. Plus, it does an excellent job of battling shine. The foundation shades range from Classic Ivory 105 to Soft Sable 320, covering a wide variety of skin tones, while the concealer shades range from Fair 105/110 Deep 315/220. What I love about this foundation-concealer pairing is that the shades are numerically matched for you so you don’t have to test out concealers on the back of your hand in the store to find one that most closely matches your favourite foundation.

The concealer comes with a sponge-tipped wand, making it really easy to apply on imperfections or on dark circles. I did have an unfortunate incident with my concealer though where I cracked the lid. I couldn’t get it open one day so I harnessed my inner Hulk strength and I ended up breaking it . . . So just as a little warning, remember that these packages are plastic and therefore can break.

So the real question for me was how does this foundation differ from CoverGirl’s other ones??? I personally like the CoverGirl Clean foundation better than this one because, though it is wetter and therefore a bit messier to apply, it feels much lighter on my skin than the Ready Set Gorgeous one. But apparently this foundation actually wicks oil and sweat away from your skin to avoid shine instead of letting all of these little nasties stay trapped under the foundation, so that is nice. However, this foundation has a much wider range of shades that other CoverGirl foundations, which is really nice because it is so annoying when you want to try a product and it doesn’t come in a shade that matches your skin tone.

This foundation retails at $7.90, and the concealer retails at $6.65, so these are lovely value products, and since they are available in drug stores, they often go on sale so you can scoop them up at a good price. I use the concealer semi-regularly, so I have one or two unopened ones stashed in my drawer so I don’t have to worry about running out. But, I only have the one foundation and, at this time, I don’t know if I would repurchase it because I am really happy with my CoverGirl Clean foundation, and it’s not like I’m cheating on the brand.

Have you tried any products from CoverGirl’s instaGLAM range??? What did you think of them???

CoverGirl Clean Liquid Foundation Makeup

img_0339Hello Hello there lovely readers 🙂 🙂

I have been reading a bunch of posts about peoples’ “holy grail” products, so I thought I would share one of my favourite beauty products with you: CoverGirl’s Clean Liquid Foundation!!!

Features:

  1. Non-comedogenic formula (i.e. does not clog pores)
  2. Water-based
  3. Lightweight and all-day wear
  4. Available in three formulas for different skin types
  5. Available in 12 shades
  6. Drugstore price tag

Where to begin . . . well, this foundation has 12 shades going from Ivory 105 to Tawny 165. There is a wide variety of lighter shades, which is ideal for me because it is hard to find a foundation to match my paper-white skin. However, the selection in darker shades is quite limited, which is disappointing because this is such an incredible product. With different formulas for normal skin, oil control or, in my case, sensitive skin, anyone can use this foundation. And with a drugstore price tag of $6.99 and sales galore, it is easy to get this foundation for less, and a little goes a long way, making it a great value purchase.

This foundation is water-based and therefore is quite wet and runny, but it goes on really smoothly and evenly, and this texture helps to blend into the skin. After application, it doesn’t even feel like I have foundation on so my skin feels light and can breathe. In short, this product just makes my skin look clean and clear, without the look of heavy makeup or concealed blemishes.

While you can apply this foundation with a sponge wedge or a beauty blender, I like just using my fingertips to get greater control and precision. In total, I use 5 small dollops of this foundation: one on the forehead, one on each cheek, one on the nose, and one on the chin. I then blend these dollops outwards to create seamless coverage. I am not prone to acne, but I find this foundation to have good medium to full coverage, while still staying light. If you find you have excess on your skin after application, lightly dab away with a wedge so as not to smear or remove existing coverage. This liquid foundation has an accompanying pressed foundation powder that can be used overtop to set or to create a more full coverage, but other powders work well too. I typically use Make Up For Ever’s Pro Finish Multi-Use Powder Foundation in 113 neutral porcelain.

***As a little warning, please note that this foundation packaging is glass. It kind of looks like plastic in the picture but it is most certainly glass and so it can crack and leak in your drawer if you aren’t careful. Please learn from my mistakes and don’t pack this foundation in the bottom of your suitcase on an international flight unless you put it in several plastic bags. It is harder than you think to get 9-hours worth of steeped foundation out of a black dress . . . ***

I have been using this foundation for years now, and I am still in love with it. It is good quality, affordable, and keeps my skin looking flawless.

What is your favourite drug store foundation???

Clinique Even Better Skin Tone Correcting Moisturizer SPF 20

img_0334Good morning everyone!!!

For the past few weeks, I have been taking a break from my Clinique Turnaround Daytime Revitalizing Moisturizer and reaching for something more hydrating: enter Clinique’s Even Better Skin Tone Correcting Moisturizer!!!

Features:

  1. Breaks apart, and exfoliates away surface darkening to even skin tone
  2. SPF 20 to protect against future darkening
  3. Makes skin look brighter
  4. Highly moisturizing
  5. Can also be used on chest and hands
  6. Oil-free
  7. Suitable for dry and combination skin types

img_0337I have been using this moisturizer for about two weeks now, half of the minimum recommended time period of 4-6 weeks to see results, and I have already noticed a change in my skin tone. My skin is softer, more hydrated, and looks far brighter and more even. I have even been going without foundation for the past few days because my skin is nice and smooth and even. I started noticing results about 5 days after using this and, while these preliminary results were nothing dramatic, the change was noticeable enough.

img_0338This product is highly moisturizing, and goes on super light so skin doesn’t feel weighed down. In addition, it fully absorbs into skin and does not leave a greasy residue. Though primarily sold as a moisturizer, this cream is actually a 4-in-1 product: moisturizer, skin tone corrector, anti-aging agent (not that I am needing this quite yet), and sunscreen. The price is definitely steep, but it can do so many things in one step, eliminating other products from your daily skin care regime.

All of Clinique’s moisturizers are expensive, with this one retailing at $55 for a 1.7 oz container. Keep your eyes peeled though because this moisturizer often makes its way into Clinique’s bonus gifts with purchase in a trial 50ml size. Also, a little goes a long way, so if you’re looking to splurge on a moisturizer, this would be a good bet. I am only about halfway through my trial size thus far, and I use it daily, either under foundation or before I go to bed.

What is your favourite Clinique moisturizer???

Estée Lauder Sumptuous Extreme Lash Multiplying Volume Mascara

img_0312Good afternoon 🙂 🙂

I seem to be on a weekly mascara testing streak, but I have started organizing and spring cleaning my makeup stores early this year, and found all manner of nifty products I tried and loved and forgot about, or never even tried at all (I know, for shame).  This mascara was included in Estée Lauder’s 2015 holiday gift set, and claims to deliver the trifecta of lift, curl AND volume, so I wanted to give it a whirl and see if it lived up to this mighty reputation.

Features:

  1. Oversized BrushComber Extreme™ brush
  2. Extreme Bold Volume™ formula
  3. Lightweight formula
  4. Clump-free
  5. Lash-Advancing Vitamin Complex to condition lashes
  6. False-lash effect

img_0314-1Like last week’s mascara, this one has an absolutely massive brush and, dare I say, it is almost too big. The solid and flexible bristles are designed to coat on as much formula as possible, and to comb and separate lashes to build up volume and definition. This brush definitely lifted my eyelashes and gave them volume, but there was no dramatic curl effect. However, when I curled my eyelashes and then applied this mascara, it held in the curl all day, which was perfect. I just wish the brush was a tiny bit smaller so I could better sculpt my lower lashes.

The mascara goes on really smoothly and evenly, and doesn’t weigh down my eyelashes, which is a huge plus. It doesn’t clump on lashes during application, and wears well throughout the day with no little black crumbles. When wearing this around university, I received so many lovely compliments on how long my eyelashes were and how bright-eyed I looked, and they made my day. When I take it off at night, my lashes don’t feel dried out or like the mascara is still glued on, which I attribute to the Lash-Advancing Vitamin Complex. I tried taking if off at night with just soap and water, and it works but it takes awhile, so for a quick removal, I use Clinique’s Take The Day Off Makeup Remover For Lids, Lashes, and Lips.

This mascara retails for CAN $30, which is pricy, so I am glad it came in a gift set, but I would recommend this mascara to anyone with thin, sparse lashes who is looking for a mascara to lift their eyelashes, literally. It is definitely one of the best highstreet mascaras I have tried.

What is your go-to mascara???

CoverGirl Plumpify BlastPRO Mascara

img_0259

img_0264

Good gracious, it has been far too long since I did a product review post. You’d think, given the Christmas holidays and all, that I would have been buying up beauty products like mad, but in fact, I did quite the opposite. I picked up this little number at least a month ago, and completely forgot about it until I saw it on my bathroom counter ledge and went “hmm, where’d that come from???” So earlier this week, I gave it a go, and thus far I am really enjoying it. Given this is one of Cover Girl’s newly released products, I thought I’d share my thoughts with you 🙂 🙂

Features:

  1. Newly designed brush coats lashes from roots to ends
  2. Volumizing formula
  3. No clumping
  4. Smudge-resistant
  5. Easy to remove
  6. Suitable for sensitive eyes
  7. Comes in three colours: very black, black, and black brown.

img_0262First and foremost, I want to talk about the newly designed brush, as it appears to be the major selling point of the product. Like with most CoverGirl mascaras, the brush came packaged separately from the tube so I could see what it looked like before it got all gooped up. As you can see in this picture, there are a lot of bristles. There are even fine bristles popping out of the top, perfect for getting at bottom lashes. All the major bristles are organized in a double-helix-like way, which helps coat lashes from every angle from roots to ends.

img_0272

However, I found I needed several coatings before I started to notice a difference. Also, even after I finished applying, my eyelashes didn’t have the KA-POW volume I was hoping for. They were well separated and evenly covered, but they looked much more natural. That isn’t entirely a bad thing, though. Sometimes it’s nice to wear a little mascara without looking like you glued falsies on.

Surprisingly, this mascara stayed on really well, and lived up to its claim of being smudge resistant. And when it came time to remove it, I didn’t even need proper makeup remover; just water and a touch of soap got it off. This does mean though that this is not the mascara to wear if you are planning to watch The Notebook or something because it will run like crazy, and I don’t think CoverGirl has released this product in a waterproof formula, so careful of that.

Something else to note is the size of the brush. Yes, it is massive, and it does grab all your eyelashes in one sweep, but it is so difficult to wield when trying to do your bottom lashes. The bristles at the tip help a little, but they are not ideal.

This mascara retails at $10.49 here in Canada, which is up there for a drugstore mascara, but I was able to snag it during a sale, so I believe it was around $7. I don’t know if I would purchase it again given my loyalty to trial sizes of Clinique’s High Impact Mascara, but it is a great mascara if you are looking for a more natural look. A 50x volume boost though??? I don’t know about that.

What do you think???

A Few Birthday Beauty Treats

Good morning everyone!!!

With my birthday now 9 days behind us, I wanted to share with you what I received for my birthday, focusing in on a few beauty treats.

Beauty Treats: img_6234 I was fortunate to receive from my mother something I had been eyeing for quite some time: Esteé Lauder’s Colour Portfolio Palette. This set includes 30 Pure Colour Eyeshadows, two Pure Colour Glosses, and a Pure Colour Intense Kajal Eyeliner pencil. I absolutely love the range of colours in this portfolio, and each palette section actually pops out. Plus, there is a built-in mirror, making this portfolio perfect to take on a trip with all your eyeshadows in one place, complete with an applicator brush. img_6236When my mother purchased this for me, apparently she did so on the one day that Hudson’s Bay was giving away a free full size of  Estée Lauder’s Re-Nutriv Ultimate Lift Age-Correcting Cream, a $100 value. I love when things like that happen. img_6240.jpg And finally, I was able to pick up my birthday gift from Sephora: a set of two mini NARS Velvet Matte and Satin Lip Pencils in the shades Cruella and Rikugien. The former is a classic red shade, while the latter is a more muted pink shade. I just tried out Rikugien this morning, and it goes on so smoothly!!! Now to test its lasting power. img_6204 And now for the presents from my grandparents. For as long as I can remember, every birthday my grandmother gives me a 200 sheet package of ruled paper, a $50 bill, and a pair of gloves.

Paper: The most recent package of paper I have received to date was purchased back in the 90s. How do I know, you ask??? Well, each package has a page of coupons on the front, or a promotion. On one package in particular, the coupon for purchasing three Crispy Crunch chocolate bars and getting the fourth one free expired in 1992 . . . meaning the paper was purchased at least the year before. Then another package had a promotion for getting a Batman comic book for $1.29. That promotion ended back in the late 80s. But I love getting this paper every year. As a student, I find I am always running out of paper in binders, and it is so nice to always have a stash of more. Plus, since the paper is older, it has a slight yellow hue to it, which I love. So much better than the stark white of brand new paper with the overly defined red margin line. Ha, my paper is always so different that, back in high school, all my teachers knew which work was mine without looking at the name because the paper stood out in their marking pile. Ah, youth.

$50: My grandmother claims every year that she doesn’t know what to get people, so including some money in a card is her way of making sure she doesn’t give people anything they don’t want or wouldn’t use. I think she expects me to buy myself a little present with it, but I always end up depositing it into my savings account. Got to pay for school somehow.

The pair of gloves: Now this one I find so adorable. Each year, my grandmother goes on a weekend getaway with her childhood friend. They stay in a hotel, go out for dinner, and, of course, hit up the dollar store in the big shopping mall on the drive home. This is where her hoard of gloves comes from and, every year, I am given a pair of gloves. At this point, I have at least 19 pairs, but I think I have even more because sometimes I get a pair for Christmas too. You would think this would be more pairs of gloves than anyone could ever need, but they are actually really handy (ha, so punny). They are super compact, so I keep a pair in the car, in my backpack, in jacket pockets, in purses, and anywhere else I can think of so that, come winter, my hands will never be cold.

Finally, for my birthday I asked for a goat. Not one for myself, but one that would be donated to an organization like Free the Children or OxFam, who would give the goat to a family in a developing country. It is amazing to see how a single goat can change the economic status of a family, and how much it means to them. And it is always important to give to others.

I had such a wonderful birthday celebration with my family, and I am so thankful for these thoughtful presents.

Bumble and Bumble Prêt-à-Powder

IMG_6205Good morning all!!!

With the end of November fast approaching, this heralds many test days soon to come, and many midnight study spells to prepare for them.

For me, when life gets really busy, the first thing to be kicked out of my daily routine is washing my hair. I find the whole washing, drying, and styling regime to be too time-consuming, especially when the bulk of my synapses are dedicated to information retention. And, you know, my arms get tired partway through washing my hair . . . is that just me???

I have been on the hunt for a really good dry shampoo for awhile now, and I think I’ve found my miracle product.

Features

  1. Three in one: dry shampoo, volume booster, and styler
  2. Super fine formula
  3. Works for all types of hair
  4. Can be used as a styler for freshly washed or second-or third-day-old hair
  5. Contains natural starches to enhance absorbency and add volume
  6. Contains Polysilicone-22 that absorbs oil but is invisible on hair
  7. Contains silicone, which removes oil and impurities
  8. Comes in two sizes: 0.5oz and 2oz, perfect for traveling

I have used this product on both freshly washed hair and day-old hair, and loved it thus far. After blow drying freshly washed hair, I just sprinkle some of this onto my roots and massage it onto my scalp. It gives my hair a little lift, and helps preserve that blow-dry look. I also find that doing this helps keep my hair looking cleaner in following days, so I actually end up washing my hair less. For day-old hair, the same procedure applies: just sprinkle some onto your roots and massage through hair. It comes out of the bottle as a soft, white powder, but it rubs in invisibly, so you don’t have to worry about seeing it anywhere.

For me, this is so perfect because it means I can study for as long as I think I need to, without fretting in the morning when I wake up and my hair looks way past its prime. I really like that this dry shampoo comes in a bottle instead of an aerosol can, because this way it can be recycled. And it comes in a 0.5oz travel size, making it perfect for packing on a long-haul flight to spruce your hair up a little bit.

Now, the full size is 2oz, which I was shocked about at first, because I figured it would run out super quickly, but in fact it lasts for a long time. I asked my friend about this dry shampoo, and she raved about it. Apparently her bottle has lasted her a year so far, so I expect to get quite a bit of use out of this, though maybe not quite a year. After all, exam time is yet to come.

Have you tried this dry shampoo??? What did you think of it??? Do you have a favourite dry shampoo???

Clinique Sonic System Purifying Cleansing Brush

IMG_6146For the past 6 months or so, this little cleansing brush has been my skin care go-to. I was lucky enough to be able to purchase it in a Mother’s Day box set that included the cleansing brush, and sample sizes of the cleanser, toner, and moisturizer, so I could try out the skin care line. I am a huge fan of Clinique’s Rinse-Off Foaming Cleanser and this cleansing brush works so well with it, because it helps generate a good, foamy lather on your skin and deep cleans pores. I tend to skip the toner step, but I always finish off my skin care routine with Clinique’s Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion. Since this is an investment at $99, I thought I would write an honest review for those of you out there who are considering giving it a try, or those of you on the hunt for a quick and easy way to deep clean your skin.

Features:

  1. Deep cleansing
  2. Anti-microbial
  3. Battery lasts 3 hours on one charge, perfect for traveling
  4. Effective for all skin types
  5. Two specialized brush bristle types: green for T-zone, and white for cheeks
  6. Angled brush tip to get in hard to reach places
  7. Purifies skin of oil, makeup, and dirt that may be missed when cleansing by hand
  8. Automatic shut-off
  9. Variety of brush heads for different skin care concerns
  10. Two-year warranty
  11. Charging base

How to use:

  1. Apply cleanser to wet brush head or moistened skin.
  2. Massage brush in circular motion over cheeks for 15 seconds each using the white brush head bristles. Important: you do not need to apply pressure to your skin; the brush will deeply cleanse with a light touch.
  3. Massage brush in up and down motion in and around the T-zone for 15 seconds using the green brush head bristles.
  4. Thoroughly rinse skin and lightly pat dry with towel.
  5. Rinse the brush head after every use, and lightly pat dry.
  6. Exfoliate and moisturize skin as desired.

What I love about this product is that it is waterproof, so it can be safely used in the shower. One of my biggest struggles with cleansing is rinsing because I always end up with some cleanser residue in my hair. This way, I can cleanse first so no cleanser gets in my nice, clean hair. Plus, the entire cleansing brush is anti-microbial so no little organisms will be building a town in your brush in between uses. Also, the brush does not need to be used with Clinique cleansers, so you can use any cleanser you like. I would seriously discourage using it with any scrubs or even with cleansers with those bursting beads, because it would be too harsh on your skin.

To start, the brush should only be used once daily, either in the morning or at night to allow your skin to adjust. After a week or so of using it, you can switch over to using it twice daily, both morning and night. Do not exceed two daily uses though; it will strip your skin of essential oils and it’s a waste of cleanser.

For those of you with sensitive skin, there is a specialized brush head for you, with softer bristles for the cheeks and T-zone areas. And if acne is your primary concern, there is also a specialized brush head to combat that.

The automatic shut-off is another feature that I love about this cleansing brush. It turns off every 30 seconds so you know when to move on from your cheeks to your T-zone. It’s also really handy if, like me, you sometimes zone off while cleansing and realize the brush hasn’t even been on your face half the time . . .

I took this cleansing brush with me when I went to Paris back in August, and one charge before I packed it lasted the entire trip. The battery has such good life in it, and the charging base is a nice place to rest it on your bathroom counter.

Finally, what I love about this brush is that it removes oil, dirt, and makeup that could easily be missed when cleansing your skin by hand. This one is huge for me, because I have found that, even after using some cleansers, my skin still feels waxy and dry. While this brush and the Rinse-Off Foaming Cleanser do a beautiful job with removing makeup, make sure that you rinse your brush head so you aren’t spreading the removed makeup everywhere.

All in all, I think this cleansing brush is an incredible skin care investment. It leaves my skin feeling clean and refreshed, is super easy to use, and is great for traveling. I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for a quick way to deep clean skin, at home or on-the-go.

Have you tried this cleansing brush before??? What did you think of it???
