Being in the thick of dreary, rainy winter days really takes its toll on me and my skin. Don’t get me wrong, I love jumping in rain puddles, seeing my breath in the mornings, and praying for snow, but my skin doesn’t appreciate the cold weather. That’s where this mask comes in as the ultimate winter pick-me-up.

Features

  1. Comprised of orange, lemon, and clementine extracts
  2. Contains a proprietary complex of vitamins C, E, and B5, along with revitalizing minerals
  3. Contains AHA fruit acids that exfoliate and smooth skin
  4. Suitable for sensitive skin
  5. Citrus jam texture
  6. Smells incredible

I use this product twice per week, on Sundays and Wednesdays after my morning skin cleansing regime. As directed, I apply a generous amount with gentle circular motions, then leave it on my face for around 10 minutes while I catch up on some blog reading. I typically remove it with some warm water and a face towel, but I have heard a cotton pad works just as well.

The best way I can describe how lovely this product is is to say that it leaves my skin clear, bright, and glowing, all the things I want my skin to be in winter. My complexion has also become much smoother and even, and my skin feels so healthy and soft after use and for the next few days until I use it again.  An added bonus is how amazing this product smells. The dominant smell is freshly cut oranges and clementines, but the hints of lemon give it a slightly tart scent. The combination wakes me right up in the mornings, energizing me and my skin.

One thing that surprised me about this product the first time I used it was the thick pieces of citrus in the jam-like mask. I had initially expected a smoother texture, but the pieces actually help in exfoliating and speak to just how natural this product is.

This is definitely a splurge purchase at CAN $80 for the 100mL jar, but it is so worth it.

Turning 21 . . .

Birthday cake 2016So as of Wednesday morning, I am 21 years old.

It’s scary to think that not all that long ago I was still in high school, and now I am almost finished university. I’ve always been intrigued by the way that time can feel as though it passes at a glacial pace one moment and then at warp speed the next.

Being the planner that I am, I read numerous articles and blog posts about what 21 was going to be like. Well, most of the articles must have been written from an American perspective because all the exciting things had to do with drinking. I drink socially, but certainly not enough to have a go-to drink, an alcohol budget, a preference for getting drunk on decent versus cheap liquor, or having a preferred bartender.

The other main thing mentioned in the articles was being able to travel to Vegas. I am actually planning to head to Vegas for the first time in early 2017 as a belated birthday celebration (spoiler alert for future travel blog posts!!!) but I already have my gambling cap set at $50 (talk about living life on the edge).

Turkey Casserole November 2016
Grandma Pearl’s Incredible Turkey Casserole
As I do every year, I celebrated my birthday at my grandparents house, and my grandmother just so happened to have my favourite meal stashed away in her freezer: turkey casserole. Essentially it is all of the leftovers of Thanksgiving dinner combined into one culinary creation, and it is my ultimate comfort food.

Last year I shared 20 facts about me in celebration of my 20th birthday, but this year I wanted to do something a little different and open up the comments section to questions.

The Versatile Blogger Award

The Versatile Blogger Award logoOh my goodness, this nomination completely took me by surprise, and added a lovely bright spot to a day of studying in the library for round two of university midterms. Incidentally, I have just got through this round of tests, so now I can actually write the post without fear of sneaking little linguistic facts into it to show my learning progress.

Thank you to Nicole Ilene at Sorry, I’m Booked for nominating me for this award; if you haven’t read her blog before, I would recommend having a gander. She is such a lovely person and writes about so many different things.  The rules of this award are:

  1. Thank the person who nominated you.
  2. Share the award on your blog.
  3. Share seven random facts about yourself.
  4. Tag 10 bloggers with less than 1000 followers and let them know they have been nominated.

Thinking of facts about myself on the spot is always so strange because people can point them out quite easily but I cannot for the life of me come up with something interesting.

  1. I am terrible at coming up with ideas of what to do with friends when we hang out.
  2. I talk a lot. Like a lot. A. Lot.
  3. I really like watching documentaries.
  4. I treat the R and L on my headphones as law.
  5. I can, and do spend countless hours organizing things.
  6. I love watching movies with subtitles, even when they are in English.
  7. My favourite punctuation mark is an ellipsis …

And now for my nominees:

I’m sure some of you have been nominated before, but I have discovered so many amazing blogs recently and I have some favourites that I wanted to highlight 🙂 🙂

Pumpkin Carving

October 2016 pumpkin carving lit upYesterday, my boyfriend and I got together and carved pumpkins. Halloween is his favourite holiday and neither of us could remember the last time we had carved a pumpkin so I insisted we carve up a few this year.

I don’t know about other places, but in Canada we have annual field trips in elementary school to a local pumpkin patch where we can pick out a pumpkin, and then take it back to school and carve it. That was one of my favourite field trips as a child because we were allowed to scout out pumpkins for as long as we liked; I could sit down and just have a chat with them if I wanted to (I was an odd youngster; still an odd person now). The only rule was you had to be able to comfortably carry your pumpkin back to the school bus. And no, it doesn’t count if you can roll the pumpkin to the bus. My friend and I tried it one year, and it turns out you have to be able to get it off the ground and keep it that way.

I live just up the road from a local farm with rows and rows of pumpkins, but my boyfriend lives quite far away from me, and neither of us were too fussed about it so we picked up two pumpkins from the grocery store.

Initially, it was meant to be a pumpkin carving contest, but the competitive element never really panned out since I needed help carving the top opening and then dislodging a knife from the mouth of my pumpkin.

He went for more of a classic pumpkin face with an eclectic flair of diamond eyes and parallelogram-like top opening, and I went for a Jack Skullington-esque pumpkin.

All in all, I think they turned out quite lovely, and this definitely got me excited for Halloween 🎃🎃

NYX Liquid Suede Cream Lipsticks

NYX Cosmetics Liquid Suede Cream LipsticksHappy Sunday all!!!

I haven’t done a review post in quite awhile so I wanted to get back into the groove of things with a review of one of my new favourite products: NYX’s Liquid Suede Cream Lipsticks.  I picked up three shades during my last drug store haul, which you can read here if you’re interested, and since then I have been wearing one of the three almost every day.

Features

  1. Even application
  2. Quick-drying
  3. Matte finish
  4. Lightweight
  5. Waterproof
  6. Fragrance-free
  7. Drugstore price tag
  8. Available in 12 shades, ranging from neutral to bold

One of my biggest concerns about liquid lipstick was whether it would dry out my lips or accentuate any cracking I had, especially during the winter. I have to be honest and say that these lipsticks do dry out my lips more than a traditional lipstick would, but it is nothing to be concerned about. I wouldn’t recommend these to anyone who is prone to having dry lips though, because it could result in further dehydration and flaking. The product also has the tendency to settle into lip lines, so keep that in mind.

I did have to be careful after I first applied it because it does not dry instantly and can easily smudge. It does dry fairly quickly, however, with a completely opaque finish. The application wand allowed me to fill in all of my lips, including the tough-to-reach places like the edges and near the Cupid’s bow. It is really important to fully cover lips though, otherwise it can look patchy and uneven when it dries.

The three shades I purchased are Tea & Cookies (a rose pink), Cherry Skies (a deep wine red), and Vintage (dark plum with mauve undertones).

Swatches

NYX Cosmetics Liquid Suede Cream Lipsticks swatches

I was most impressed with how vibrant the shades are. Some of the shades in the range are definitely for the more adventurous, like the neon purple shade Amethyst, but some of them are absolutely gorgeous pink and nude shades.

I also really like how long-lasting the formula is. I can wear one of the shades for an entire day of classes, which covers at least two meals, snacks, and regular water drinking, without any touch-ups. I find some of the darker shades like Vintage fade slightly at the corners of my mouth as the day goes on, but it is barely noticeable, and can easily and quickly be touched-up.

In short, these liquid lipsticks are the perfect combination of good quality and affordability, and are a great product with which to try out liquid lipstick.

Do you like wearing liquid lipsticks??? Let me know in the comments below 🙂 🙂

Zoella Beauty Sweet Inspirations Unboxing and First Impressions

Zoella Beauty Sweet Inspirations October 2016

Zoella Beauty Sweet Inspirations October 2016 display

Alright, I may be the last person to know this but, myth debunked, Zoella Beauty products are available in Canada. Sort of. Canadian drug stores don’t carry them, but they can be ordered online. Hopefully some other people out there were unaware of this until quite recently, otherwise I just live under a very small rock.

The last two ranges passed me by because of this absurd not-available-in-Canada notion, but this time I jumped on the beauty train and ordered four of products from the new range from Feelunique. The only product unavailable for purchase online was the body mist spray, but I don’t mind one little bit because after a bath and some lotion, I will be smelling like vanilla and macaroons in no time.

In total, this range is comprised of 8 products, all of which smell like vanilla-based sweet macaroons. I think my favourite part about this release is the adorable pastel-coloured French patisserie style packaging. It is almost too beautiful to use. Almost.

I also picked up the Zoella Beauty Winking Beauty Bag, which was released as part of the first range, but I fell in love with it when Zoe first went through the the products, and when I saw it online I immediately added it to my cart. I don’t know if I will use it as a beauty bag, but I think it would be an adorable pencil case.

After purchasing so many Zoella Beauty products, this Sticker Me! Beauty Bag was added to my cart as a free gift. And who doesn’t love free???

5 Ways to Backup Assignment Files

October 2016 5 Ways to Back Up Files imageAfter completing three years of university, and a decade of grade school before that, I have come to learn that one of the biggest universal fears among students is the terror that follows the loss, or potential loss, of an assignment.

Because of this, I wanted to write a post about 5 ways I go about backing up my files so that I am spared the frantic search through recovered files for my assignment, or dread of having to re-write the assignment if it is lost in the void.

1. Email to Yourself

I love doing this because it is so quick and easy. The only downside is that it can clog up your inbox if you have a lot of drafts for one assignment or multiple assignments on the go. However, once the assignment is completed and handed in, you can always go through your inbox and simply delete the drafts, keeping a final copy just in case.

2. Backup on a USB Drive

This is a super handy way to not only back up an projects or assignments you may be working on, but also to transport them. USB drives are especially helpful when working on a group project because each member can write their own portion and bring them to a group meeting on a USB drive where they can be put on the same computer and combined. Of course, just make sure you keep the USB drive in a safe place like on your keychain or in your pencil case, because the only flaw in this system is if the USB goes missing.

3. Transfer to a Hard Drive

This is a great long-term solution for keeping all your assignments saved and secure. For instance, I am still using the laptop I got back in 8th grade and it had a ton of files on it from my high school years that I didn’t need to be bringing to university with me everyday. So, I purchased a hard drive, transferred all my files onto it, and then deleted the vast majority of them off my laptop. Now I have much more free space on my laptop and a backup of all of my assignments.

4. Print Out Drafts Throughout Writing Process

This is not the most environmentally-friendly way to back up files, and can be time-consuming depending on the length of the assignment due the time required to re-type out the draft if it did get lost, but it is a sure way to have hard copies of an assignment and ensure that no technology gets in the way.

Drop in the Cloud

The cloud is probably the easiest and best way to back up your files. As much as I don’t like the idea of my documents floating around the digital atmosphere, I am forced to admit that dropping assignments in the cloud is a good way to save them, access them anywhere, and send them to others.

How do you back up your files???

Clinique Autumn 2016 Haul and Bonus Time

Clinique Autumn 2016 Haul and Bonus Time Sassy and Sweet Colour Collections

Clinique Autumn 2016 Haul and Bonus Time Sassy Colour Collection
Clinique Autumn 2016 Haul and Bonus Time Sweet Colour CollectionGood afternoon all, and happy Wednesday!!!

I was wandering through The Bay the other week and saw that Clinique finally had a bonus gift out. The last one was way back in February, which you can read about here, and since then I had been waiting and waiting for the next bonus before I stocked up on my favourite products. Well, I stocked up all right, and the cosmetics bags are so cute and I love all the sample size products.

Clinique Autumn 2016 Haul and Bonus Time purchases
Left: Glazed Berry, Right: Graffiti Pop
To qualify for the bonus, I purchased four products in two separate purchases so I could get one of each bonus. In the first round, I picked up a Different Lipstick in the shade Glazed Berry, which is a gorgeous frosted rose pink shade, and a Long Last Soft Matte Lipstick in the shade Matte Beauty, a classic rose shade that offers full-coverage and a matte finish without drying or fading.

In the second round, I went for one of the new Clinique Pop Lip Colour + Primer Lipsticks in the shade Graffiti Pop, a vibrant raspberry pink (after swatching all the shades on my arm, of course). I reviewed the original Clinique Pop Lip Colour + Primer Lipsticks back in 2015, which you can read here if you’d like, and my main issue with them was that the demi-matte finish meant they did not last as long as the soft matte lipsticks and they had a slight sheen. Well, this new release of matte pop shades has me motivated to mosey on over to the Clinique counter next time I’m out shopping and scoop up a few more. I also picked up a Clinique Pretty Easy Liquid Eyelining Pen in 01 Black because I have been obsessed with it ever since it was first released and I reviewed it here, and now it is just starting to run out, so I am keeping another one on hand.

The bonus gift this go-around includes:

  • Cosmetics bag
  • Clinique Smart SPF-15 Custom-Repair Moisturizer
  • Take the Day Off Makeup Remover For Lids, Lashes, and Lips
  • All About Shadow Duo and Blush in Sassy or Sweet Colour Collections
  • Clinique Pop Glaze Sheer Lip Colour + Primer in Sassy or Sweet Colour Collections
  • High Impact Mascara in Black
  • Clinique Happy Perfume Spray

The choices available for this bonus were the cosmetics bag, and the colour collection of Sweet or Sassy. I got one of each because I was super eager to snoop through them and try out all the shades of the colour collections.

What Clinique products have you been loving lately???

A Room With A View by E.M. Forster

A Room With a View by E.M. Forster September 2016I am slightly ashamed to admit this, but I saw the movie adaptation of this book before I read it. I know, I know, such a bookworm taboo. Plus I committed the book-blogging taboo of finishing a book ages ago and then forgetting to finish my review post of it. Shame on me. At least I found this review lurking in my draft folder, which sparked a second-wave of my love for this book.

For those of you who haven’t read this book, it chronicles the story of a young woman named Lucy Honeychurch who visits Italy with her aunt Charlotte. When they arrive and find themselves staying in rooms at the Pensione Bertolini without views, fellow guests Mr. Emerson and his son George step in, trading rooms. Thus begin Lucy’s interactions with the Emersons. Even after leaving Florence for Rome, returning home to England, and getting engaged, Lucy still cannot stop herself from thinking about the Emersons, the young son in particular.

For such a short novel, I found there to be lots of unexpected plot twists, which is why my little summary above is so brief; I don’t want to spoil anything for those of you who haven’t read it. The writing style is similar to other books published around the same time (1900s) but it didn’t labour too much on descriptions of landscape or clothing. It did, however, do a marvellous job of giving backstory to characters that were introduced later on.

A Room With a View movie posterThe movie adaptation of this novel was released in 1985 starring Helena Bonham Carter, Dame Maggie Smith, and Denholm Elliot. I re-watched the movie once I finished reading the book and found that the scenes matched up closely to the chapters, which is always nice. I feel like this would be a great movie to watch in English class if the book is taught in school because movies tend to engage students more and no major cinematic liberties were taken.

And, as always, a few book facts:

Opening Paragraph:

“The Signora had no business to do it,” said Miss Bartlett, “no business at all. She promised us south rooms with a view, close together, instead of which here are north rooms, here are north rooms, looking into a courtyard, and a long way apart. Oh, Lucy!”

What I Loved Most: I loved the character development of Lucy Honeychurch, particularly when she begins to mentally separate what she wants from what she knows society and her family expect her to want.

What I Loved Least: Given the time period in which this book was written, women were second-class citizens. I knew this going into the book, but that didn’t make my blood boil any less when I read things that implied women could not think about or do certain things because they were the weaker, more temperamental sex.

Memorable Line:

The contest lay not between love and duty. Perhaps there never is such a contest. It lay between the real and the pretended, and Lucy’s first aim was to defeat herself. (p. 181)

Closing Paragraph:

Youth enwrapped them; the song of Phaethon announced passion requited, love attained,. But they were conscious of a love more mysterious than this. The song died away; they heard the river, bearing down the snows of winter into the Mediterranean.

Final Thoughts: I really enjoyed reading this book, and the little sequel A View Without a Room that was included at the back of my copy of the book. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a nice, light read while on holiday or busy with school or work. But be ready to be miffed by the lines about women’s abilities.

Have you read this book before??? If yes, let me know what you thought of it in the comments below 🙂 🙂

How To Take Good Lecture Notes

Good morning, and happy Friday!!!

By now, many of you should be back at school or college/university. Having spent the first week going through course syllabi and getting started, professors launch into lectures and teaching course material. This means that everything discussed in class may be important for future studying and getting a good grade.

All professors have different teaching styles: some hand out worksheets, some stand at the front of the lecture hall and just talk, and some display slideshow presentations with notes (and even post them online if you’re lucky). Information presented in lecture is typically the central concepts of the course most likely to be included on exams. The key is to develop a note-taking system that enables you to perform the three R’s: review, remember, and reflect.

By review, I mean that you can flip through notes after class and make sure you understood all the concepts covered and mark those you need to seek clarification on from a professor during office hours.

Notes also have to be conducive to remembering, so having short, to-the-point notes in bullet-form or numbered off are a real asset. I remember in my first year, all of my notes were in full sentences. Looking back, I was just wasting time in lectures and cramping my hand for no real reason because no one but me was going to see them, and thus I didn’t need perfect grammar and punctuation.

Finally, reflecting on notes is a step that I know a lot of people either skip over or don’t know about. Finding ways to connect lecture concepts to notes and readings from earlier in the year or even from different classes is an excellent way to test subject matter knowledge and to better understand how the concepts learned fit into the larger picture.
There are 7 main techniques I use to take good lecture notes that will help accomplish these three R’s:

Be Prepared

Look over your notes from the previous class and prepare for the day’s lecture, anticipating themes, concepts, and ideas that the lecturer will likely present.

Be a Keener

I know no one likes the idea of sitting up at the front of the classroom but it is a great way to guarantee you will see all of the professor’s notes, be able to hear them clearly, and not be distracted by people on their laptops.

Be Specific

Lecture notes should be the bare-bones outline of the professor’s key ideas along with any examples discussed that make them easier to understand and apply. Jotting down particular terms used and their definitions, and class contributions are both helpful ways to expand upon what is covered in lecture and better prepare for exams. Writing out index cards for a course is another good way to specify the important concepts of a class and test your knowledge of them throughout the term.

Be Selective

Trust me, I understand the temptation to scribble down every word of a professor’s slideshow notes, but this isn’t an effective use of time. Sure, you have all the notes, but odds are you didn’t really think about what you were writing down, or how it fits in with the rest of the course. A much better idea is to write down the main concepts first and then add in filler words if you have time later on. Also, leaving blanks in your notes is a good way to indicate that things are missing and can be filled in after class using the textbook or other learning resources.

Be Old-School

By this, I mean take notes using the tried-and-true pen and paper method. Typing out notes is an awesome way to make sure you get everything down from lectures, especially if you are a slow writer, but studies have shown that people learn much better from physically writing out the words than they do hitting lettered keys to form them.

Be an Active Listener

Actively listening to a professor is a good way to study during the lecture itself. By learning the material as it is taught, less memorization will be needed when it comes time to study for an exam.Plus, professors often have little “tells” that indicate when they are about to cover an important topic, such as long exhalations, change in intonation, sits down, and so on, so those portions of lecture notes can be marked as essential to review.

Be Questioning

I for one detest raising my hand in class to ask questions but it is the best way to seek on-the-spot clarification of a topic not fully understood. This will also help with making more specific and useful notes that highlight difficult concepts.

And those are my 7 tips on taking good lecture notes that will help with effective studying for tests and review for exams.

How do you take notes during classes or lectures???
